Google’s Search advertising changes are a useful reason to review the connection between your ads, your website and the inquiries your business receives. Automation can work with the inputs it is given. Someone still needs to decide what a suitable inquiry looks like, which promises the brand can make, and where a prospective customer should land.

First, separate the two upgrade timelines

Google’s June 11, 2026 update moved the start of Dynamic Search Ads sunset and automatic upgrades to February 2027. Automatic upgrades for campaigns using Automatically Created Assets (ACA) and the campaign-level broad match setting still begin in September 2026. Do not assume every legacy Search feature shares the same deadline. Check the notices and settings in the specific account. Source: Google’s updated announcement.

Google also reports an average 7% increase in conversions or conversion value at similar CPA/ROAS when the complete AI Max feature set is used instead of search term matching alone. That is Google’s internal 2026 data for non-retail advertisers; it is not a prediction for a particular practice or a comparison with every previous campaign setup. What AI Max changes in the working process

Google describes AI Max as an optimization layer within Search campaigns. Its setup documentation covers search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. It also provides controls over messaging and destination URLs. Review the documentation alongside the actual account rather than relying on a generic checklist of buttons. Source: Google Ads Help.

In April, Google announced AI Brief to let advertisers provide business, messaging and audience context, with a phased rollout. Availability should be checked in your account. The practical point is that a clear brand brief remains useful even when software generates more of the combinations. Source: Google, April 30, 2026.

Our recommendation: review the destination before increasing reach

Make a list of the services you want to promote and the pages that accurately describe them. Check that those pages show the right offer, location and next step. Identify outdated promotions, irrelevant articles and other destinations that should not receive paid traffic.

For a practice with several services, one broad homepage may not answer every visitor’s question. A person looking for a particular consultation should reach a page that explains that consultation. For an expert business, a visitor should be able to distinguish advisory work, speaking engagements or other services that the business actually offers.

Write down what a valuable conversion means

Separate a button click, a submitted inquiry, a qualified inquiry and a confirmed appointment. They can all help explain the customer journey, but they are not interchangeable. If reporting treats every interaction as a business outcome, an attractive conversion total can hide a weak inquiry pipeline.

Before a campaign change, agree how qualified outcomes will be checked and how the account team will receive that feedback. For a small service business, even a consistent internal record of inquiry quality can make campaign discussions more useful. Any later measurement integration should be implemented through the verified account setup.

Keep the message consistent across teams

Give the people responsible for content, advertising and the website the same short brief: services, intended customers, locations, differentiators, allowed claims and next steps. Review the ad, landing page and follow-up experience together.

For example, if a video introduces a consultation while the destination page promotes a different offer, more automated reach will not resolve the mismatch. The team should agree on the promise before it evaluates which channel is delivering that promise most efficiently.

Test with a decision in mind

Document the current settings and business baseline before making a change. Choose a limited question, agree how long to observe it given the volume and sales cycle, and decide which outcomes would justify continuing or revising the approach. Avoid changing the offer, destination and measurement definitions at the same time if you want to understand the result.

The useful reporting conversation is specific: which inquiries were relevant, which services attracted them, which messages needed clarification, and what should change next? It requires business context as well as campaign operation.

Where a connected media team helps

When several people separately manage ads, content and landing pages, the business owner often becomes the person reconciling their decisions. A coordinated team can own that connection and turn feedback into the next set of updates.
